Westport Walking Tour
Walking Tour #1: Westport
Starting at the Harris Kearney House
July 15th, 2017 @ 10:00am
Get a closer look at Westport’s most interesting and unique sites, and learn about the area’s long history and diverse culture with a Historic Kansas City walking tour.
Westport Walking Tour will tell you the background of the town founded in the 1830s. The town of Westport was one of the major gateways to the trails west. Remnants of Westport’s 19th-century charm color the neighborhood with historic buildings, old-style lampposts and tree-lined boulevards. You will see homes and commercial buildings dating from the 1850s and learn of the early days of this unique shopping and entertainment district.
Come take HKC’s walking tour. The days of Westport’s neighborhood historic feel are limited and soon to be in its place will be large suburban type high rises. Come see historic Westport before it changes forever.
Take a stroll through Pendleton Heights and back in time to Kansas City’s “first suburb”. Located just a mile-and-a-half east of the city market, Pendleton Heights became THE fashionable early suburb in the 1880s and 1890s just north of Independence Blvd in the Northeast area of Kansas City. The neighborhood retains a number of Queen Anne Victorian Homes and was designated as a local Historic District in 2008 in an effort to prevent the loss of more historic buildings.
Specific location for start of tour will be emailed at least 1 week before event.
Starting at the Jacob Loose Mansion September 16th, 2017 @ 10:00am
Experience more than 100 years of Kansas City architectural history as we take a stroll on Armour Blvd in Midtown Kansas City. We will see the evolution of the Boulevard from early mansions, the first apartment hotels, through post-World War II apartment buildings to the restoration of all apartment buildings during the past 10 years. Observe how the area was successfully revitalized by preserving ALL the historic buildings on this Boulevard.
