Global Gardens is part of JVS (Jewish Vocational Service) in KCMO. We are developing gardens in Historic Northeast neighborhoods.

The Global Gardens Project is part of JVS (Jewish Vocational Service) in Kansas City, MO. The NEKCChamber of Commerce partners with JVS to host these classes in the Historic Northeast. We are working to find vacant lots in the Historic Northeast neighborhood and develop them into garden spaces. We then connect refugees in the neighborhood to a garden and provide educational workshops about growing in the Midwest U.S.

Our goals are to increase access to healthy foods, increase physical activity, and increase social integration. JVS is one of the non-profit agencies that does refugee resettlement in KCMO through the US Refugee Admissions Program.

Refugees originate from countries all over the world. They have fled from their homes because of persecution related to ethnicity, race, religion, membership in a particular social group or political opinion, etc. Many refugees have come from agricultural backgrounds, and when they are resettled, they usually find themselves in the middle of a foreign city with no access to land on which to grow foods that are familiar to them.

Historic Northeast KCMO has been described as a food desert. On top of limited access to grocery stores, refugees often have difficultly finding foods they are used to; what they do find is usually very expensive. Without land, people long for a way to return to their roots and to put their agricultural skills to use.

We currently have two garden sites in Northeast. They are vacant lots, which we lease from the Land Bank. They have never been used as gardens before. This spring, we will clean up the lots, till them, and plant a variety of crops. Our refugee growers will each plan out their gardens and choose what they want to grow. They are excited about growing food to feed their families.
