Founder Becky Gripp has worked with many well known corporations and non profit organizations. In addition to overseeing The Tamale Kitchen, Ms. Gripp sits on the Board of the NorthEast KC Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Kansas City Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and is the Les dames d’Escoffier International Kansas City Chapter Director at Large.The Tamale Kitchen

Guest speaker: Janay Reliford MSW

Miss Reliford , Chair of KC Reparations Coalition will explain the role of this organization and the Mayor’s newly formed reparations commission. The Coalition helped document the information that led to the city ordinance which authorized the commission. Tamales and Greens

The esteem of tamales dates back to the times when, long before the Spaniards arrived, Mesoamericans believed that God crafted humans from corn. Because corn was so important, tamales made from ground corn and wrapped in a husk became a part of ritual offerings. Greens are to the black community what tamales are to the brown community history, heritage and tradition. Greens have been cooked and used for food since African slaves in the southern colonies needed to provide food for their families. Some of this food consisted of the tops of turnips and other greens discarded in the fields while picking.
